Safety Alert

The Old Westbury Police department reports the following safety alert.  As most residents have been aware, there has been an increase in stolen vehicles and burglaries throughout Nassau County especially along the North Shore this year.  The Old Westbury Police Department is continuously working to gather intelligence, track crime trends in the area and working with partner agencies.  In recent weeks we have seen a trend of increased stolen vehicles and burglaries in areas all around Old Westbury.  Many of the burglaries are stolen vehicle related, where thieves are entering homes through unlocked doors, garages or open windows. Once inside they steal key fobs and then steal cars from the driveway or garage.  These have occurred at various hours including day time.  We remind residents to be sure all doors, windows and garage doors are closed and locked at all times of the day. If you have an alarm, set it even when home. Remove key fobs and other valuables from your vehicles.  Be aware of your surroundings and watch for suspicious vehicles or people when leaving or arriving at home. If in doubt call the Old Westbury Police Department to report it.   Be particularly aware during the holiday season when shopping.  Subjects have been known to follow victims out of stores and attempt to steal their packages if left unattended in a vehicle.  If you think you are being followed call 911 and drive directly to the nearest police station. Preprogram the Old Westbury Police Department  1 Store Hill Road Old Westbury, NY into your GPS,  this way if you need it in a situation where you think someone is following you it's already there.   For more safety tips visit our Police Department page on the Village of Old Westbury website or email mbrown@oldwestburypd.org
