Message from the Chief

In order to achieve public safety a variety of partnerships must be formed.  One of the most critical of these partnerships is between a police department and the residents that they serve.  I believe that our department has an obligation to keep our residents informed about emerging crime patterns and trends.

To that end, I would like to inform residents about an incident that occurred yesterday in the Nassau County Police Department’s Sixth Precinct.  A woman returned to her home after grocery shopping and was unloading her car, which was parked in her attached garage.  Both the trunk and the drivers door were open and her purse was still within the car.  As she returned to continue unloading the groceries she discovered two individuals in her garage, who subsequently drove away with her vehicle.

I inform you of this not to alarm you, but to make you situationally aware so that you can better protect yourselves and your families.  It is likely that this person was followed home by these individuals so that they could steal her car.

Please be vigilant and aware of any vehicles that may be following you.  If you believe you are being followed, call 911 or drive directly to our police department at 1 Store Hill Road.  Close your garage door immediately after you pull in and try to never leave your key fobs within your vehicles.
