The Old Westbury Police Department would like to inform residents about a potential privacy issue for iPhone users related to a recent operating system upgrade. The IOS 17 update includes a feature called “NameDrop” which is defaulted on during the upgrade process. This feature allows the automatic sharing of your contact information simply by bringing two iPhones close together.
To disable this feature, navigate to Settings, General, Airdrop, Bringing Devices Together and then toggle the setting from on to off.
Parents should consider disabling this feature on their children’s phones.
Again, this is only for those using iPhones with the IOS 17 update.
Additionally, the department would like to remind residents that the pattern burglary group generally operates after sundown into the early evening hours. With the end of daylight savings time, this translates into much earlier in the day. During post-arrest debriefings, members of these groups have disclosed that they target houses that are dark and appear unoccupied.
Please consider leaving or setting lights to come on throughout your homes after dark, regularly using your alarm systems (even when at home) and immediately notifying our department of any suspicious activity. Burglaries have been reduced substantially this year and we greatly appreciate the cooperation and partnership with our residents to achieve these results.
